Brazil's monthly renewable energy generation in 2022 was the highest in nearly a decade

Brazil's electricity trading Center (CCEE) released its latest data earlier this month showing that the country's average monthly power generation increased to about 67,000 megawatts in 2022, with renewables such as hydropower, wind, solar and biomass accounting for 92 percent of the total, or nearly 62,000 megawatts per month, the highest in nearly a decade.

The report said that in 2022, the positive impact of climate conditions and water resources on reservoir levels, as well as the expansion of wind and solar farms, contributed to the rapid growth of renewable energy generation in Brazil.

In terms of scale, about 73.6% of the average monthly renewable power   generation in 2022 will come from hydropower, or 45,613 MW. It was followed by wind power, with an average monthly capacity of 9,066 megawatts, or 14.6 percent. Solar and other renewable energy sources, such as biomass, accounted for about 11.8% of the monthly total.

In terms of growth, the country added 88 solar power plants in 2022, a 64.3% increase from the previous year, the highest growth rate in the renewable energy sector. Wind power was up 12.6 per cent year on year. Wind power is growing in the north-eastern states of Rio Grande do Norte, Bahia and Piaui. Currently, Brazil has 891 wind farms across the country with a total installed capacity of more than 25,000 megawatts.
